THE PROJECT AIMS TO ALTER THE CURRENT MINDSET OF SOCIETY TOWARDS AFFORDABLE HOUSING. IT ASPIRES TO RAISE THE QUALITY OF LIFE OF THE LESS FORTUNATE IN MUMBAI, INDIA. THERE ARE 480,000 VACANT FLATS IN THE CITY OF MUMBAI WHILE 60% OF ITS POPULATION LIVES IN SLUMS. THIS PROJECT PUTS FORTH A DESIGN INTERVENTION WHICH NOT ONLY PRO-CREATES A PHYSICAL DESIGN TO HOUSE THE INDIVIDUALS IN, BUT ALSO AN INTERVENTION WHICH ADDRESSES THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECT OF THE WAY MUMBAI SEES AFFORDABILITY.  AN AFFORDABLE MODULE BASED HOUSING IS PROPOSED ALONG WITH AN INSTITUTE, WHICH ACTS AS A BODY OF KNOWLEDGE INCREASING THE PUBLIC’S AWARENESS TO THE CRUCIAL FACTORS OF AFFORDABILITY WHILE BREAKING AWAY FROM THE DENSE CONCRETE JUNGLE WE LIVE IN.
THE INTERVENTION IS BROKEN UP INTO THREE PARTS:

  1. PART A DEALS WITH CREATING THE PHYSICAL DESIGN WHICH IS TO PROVIDE 60 MODULES OF 33 SQ.M. & 40 MODULES OF 43 SQ M ALONG WITH A HEIGHT RESTRICTION OF 11 FLOORS AND A SITE RESTRICTION OF RESERVING 3600 SQ.M. OF THE SITE AS A PLAYGROUND TO BE GIVEN BACK TO THE COMMUNITY. AN EXTENSION WAS MADE TO THE BRIEF BY ADDING 10 RENTAL UNITS WHICH WOULD CHARGE A MINIMUM AMOUNT EVERY MONTH, NEEDED TO PROVIDE FOR THE MENTAINANCE OF THE BUILDING.
  1. THE NEXT PART DEALS WITH EXTENDING THIS DESIGN TO THE USERS. THAT IS, HOW TO MAKE IT FINANCIALLY ACCESSIBLE TO THEM. A HOUSING POLICY IS DEVELOPED AND INTEGRATED INTO THE DESIGN INTERVENTION TO FULFIL THIS. THE POLICY IS EXPLAINED THOROUGHLY IN SHEET 05 ATTACHED.
  1. THE LAST PART IS AN INSTITUTION TO HOUSING. ITS PURPOSE IS THAT OF BEING A BODY OF KNOWLEDGE FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING PROJECTS. IT IS THE BASE INSTITUTION SET-UP, A FIRST OF ITS KIND IN THE CITY.  THEREFORE, IT IS TO BE MADE AN EXAMPLE OF. IT IS TO LEAD THE WAY AND ACT AS A PLATFORM FOR CHANGE. THE MATERIAL CHOICE FOR THIS BUILDING IS CROSS LAMINATED TIMBER WHICH IS EXPLAINED IN SHEET 06 ATTACHED.  IF WE COMPARE A 10 STOREY BUILDING OF CONCRETE WITH ONE MADE OUT OF CLT, THE CONCRETE BUILDING EMITS 1200 TONNES OF CO2 WHILE THE CLT BUILDING WOULD ABSORB 2400 TONNES OF CO2. IMAGINE THE IMPACT THIS COULD MAKE FOR THE GLOBAL WARMING CONDITION OUE EARTH CURRENTLY FACES!
