Swish has taken Sweden by storm in recent years. The app, which allows users to send money to other users seamlessly in less than a minute, is now one of Sweden’s top companies, and its reach continues to grow.
In this article, in collaboration with one of our partners, we’ll tell you five things you probably didn’t know about the Swish app phenomenon.
“Do you have Qasha?”
The appropriate name for the app wasn’t always obvious. Before deciding on the perfect name, names like Qasha, Swapp, and Cashmo were also discussed – names that resembled American apps with the same function. In the end, the developers settled on what is now a beloved name and a legalized verb in the Swedish dictionary: Swish.
Commenting on the fact that a well-known app name can be difficult to write, Swish business developer Anders Edlund simply writes: “Dear children have many names, don’t they?”
Safer casino games with Swish
One industry that has quickly embraced the flexibility of payment apps is the casino industry, where Swish can now be used to make deposits to online casinos and betting sites quickly and easily. The advantage of these casinos is that they have an increased level of security, as Swedish casinos with Swish withdrawals must have a Swedish gambling license. The Swedish gambling license was introduced in 2019 and places a strong emphasis on consumer protection for players. Therefore, you can feel safe playing online if the site uses Swish as a payment method. How to check if you have played at an online casino before click on this link to find out.
Popular with shopkeepers
When Swish first appeared, it was mainly used as an alternative to time-consuming bank transfers between individuals and the banks themselves. However, today it is used for much more.
Today, Swish signs can be seen in shops in the city center, and many online stores have also started using the service in their digital checkouts. In some religious contexts, the app has also completely replaced donation boxes. In this way, the app has made life much easier for those who have forgotten their wallet at home!
Sweden's most sustainable brand
According to the Swedes, Swish as a brand has been recognized as Sweden's most sustainable digital brand for the fourth year in a row. The Sustainable Brand Index is conducted annually, which is Sweden's largest independent study. In it, Swedes have the opportunity to express their opinion on sustainability in the market, and Swish came in first place out of approximately 1,500 participating brands. Each brand is rated by 1,000 respondents.
This is not the only great award that Swish has received. In spring 2022, it was also named Tech Company of the Year by Tech Business Awards Sweden. The motivation for the award describes how Swish has become a “people’s movement” and that the app has “radically changed the conditions for Swedish citizens.”

A humanitarian hero
In addition to simplifying transactions between people, Swish has also made it easier for people to care about the world. Today, anyone can transfer a certain amount to a fund or project without writing down all their bank details on a piece of paper and sending them by mail. In fact, in 2022, Swish helped the population of Sweden send almost 500 million – that’s half a billion kronor – to Ukraine!
In addition, one could of course argue that Swish helped us contain the spread of infection during the pandemic, as the app was able to better conduct transactions while respecting social distancing. This in itself is a kind of humanitarian aid that goes beyond simply splitting the bill at a restaurant in a convenient way.
