Deadlock Lore & Setting: What's the Story? (2026)

Last updated: June 3, 2026

Behind the shooting and the souls, Deadlock has a genuinely cool world that most players blast past entirely. It's an occult, alternate-history take on New York with rival cults, elder gods and a roster full of monster-hunters and resurrected witches. If the vibes pulled you in the way they pull in most newcomers to deadlock.io, here's the setting and story so far — bearing in mind it's an alpha and the lore keeps evolving.

Quick answer: Deadlock is set in an occult alternate-history New York nicknamed "the Cursed Apple." Two teams of six serve rival elder-god Patrons and fight to summon their own Patron into the world by destroying the enemy's.

The setting

The map is an alternate-history New York City — lanes are real streets like Broadway and Park Avenue, with an Astral Gate torn open in Central Park. The aesthetic blends noir, gothic and Art Deco with early-20th-century Americana and heavy occult magic — think BioShock-adjacent vibes.

The Maelstroms and the Patrons

A first Maelstrom (an eclipse event) tore open Astral Gates and revealed magic to the world; a second, decades later, brought the Patrons — extraplanar elder gods — into contact with humanity. Each Patron grants a wish to whoever completes their summoning ritual. Two are active: the Hidden King and the Archmother, each served by a rival cult (the Amber Hand and the Sapphire Flame).

⚠ Lore note: Valve redesigned and renamed the Patrons in January 2026, so older articles describing them differently aren't wrong — just out of date. The framing shifts as the game develops.

A few great hero backstories

HeroStory hook
Vindicta VindictaExecuted during the Salem Witch Trials, resurrected by the first Maelstrom — now a winged sniper.
Drifter DrifterAn ancient, feral vampire with open contempt for the rules of vampire society.
Ivy IvyA gargoyle guardian of Spanish Harlem — so beloved Valve redesigned her model to match fan art.
Warden WardenTrained since birth to stop the Patrons from entering our world.

How the story is told

There's no campaign — lore is delivered through hero bios on the character-select screen, voice lines and hero interactions, environmental storytelling on the map, and short in-client vignettes. It's deliberately fragmented and still being written.

🎮 Like Dota 2, Deadlock tells its story through hero bios, voice lines and lore drops rather than a single narrative — the world-building accretes over patches, and the community datamines each update for new fragments.

It's an alpha, so treat any detail as provisional — but the foundation (occult NYC, dueling elder gods, a cast of resurrected oddballs) is one of the most distinctive settings in the genre.
